Benjamin Carr short biography
Benjamin Carr’s career as composer, singer, conductor, organist and businessman was spectacular. Still in his native London, Carr was the champion of popularizing classical music through education and performance. In 1793, Carr moved to the United States to explore business opportunities. Almost immediately Carr established Carr's Musical Repository and soon expanded it with a branch in New York. Carr founded Musical Journal and Musical Miscellany where he popularized a number of American composers. Later, Carr resumed his artistic career as a concert singer, harpsichordist, pianist and organist. Carr has been admired for his numerous compositions in many genres: anthems, hymns, masses, motets, sonatas, rondos, variations and operas.
