1875 - 1912
Coleridge-Taylor short biography
One of Britain’s most brilliant composers, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor started his musical career as violinist but soon changed his specialty to composition. After graduating with honors from the Royal College, Taylor became a professor of music at Trinity College and at the Rochester Choral Society. Taylor’s most famous composition, Hiawatha's wedding feast has been hailed 'One of the most remarkable events in English musical history'. Taylor accepted professorship at the Crystal Palace School of Music and Art and also became conductor of the Croydon conservatory orchestra and the Bournemouth symphony. Together with the Pan-Africanist Duse Mohammed, Coleridge Taylor established The African and Orient Review, a London newspaper. Coleridge Taylor met President Roosevelt during one of his visits to the USA.
